CONVERGE
A new spatial programme for Camden's Pirate Castle
Spatial Design | Third Places | Community Engagement | Renovation and Rehabilitation
A project proposal striving to create a conscious moment of dialogue between the elderly and the youth, where the needs of different generations and people of various backgrounds can be met. A new spatial programme for Pirate Castle in Camden. Inspired by the drive to create third places for the vitality of communities in Camden.
How can designing third places help local communities bond, learn and bridge the gap so that everyone thrives together?
The Pirate Castle
Located along the Regents Canal in Camden, The Pirate Castle is a community hub that offers water activities like boating on the canal, as well as space for meetings and events. The brief was to create an intervention and a new programme in the space that cemented The Pirate Castle's position as a cultural and activity hub responding to the needs of the local residents.

During the initial site visit and investigation several problems were highlighted by the client.
Circulation was the main spatial problem.
Bringing people together and bridge the gap between people was another.
Strategy and Planning
Something for everyone
My concept revolved around the notion of bridging the gap- particularly the intergenerational that leads to the elderly becoming neglected or excluded, grappling with feelings of loneliness in the area.

The strategy sought to keep the existing activities that were advertised for children and add on spaces for the community to inspire each other, forge meaningful connections and come together to uplift one another.

The biggest intervention spanned three floors, offering connectivity and improved circulation.
