The aim is to adapt to an existing building by introducing new functions based on a project concept developed through exploring and analyzing various contexts of the site and surroundings.
Site:
Address:

concept model: 'compassion'
By observing the activities, the density of people, noise levels, and groups of people that frequented the places around the site I could analyze the possible functions I could introduce in my proposed plan of rehabilitation to draw more people into Pirate Castle and draw attention to the work it does.
Converge
A sanctuary that encourages interaction between people of varying ages and economic backgrounds, thus, bridging the existing gaps between the diverse density of people based on the simple principle of human connection.

Material Board and section drawing
Based on my concept, the material choice transitions from kid-friendly, water-resistant material on the canal level to softer colors, plush fabrics on level one. The middle portion represents the street level, where the two generations meet, in the book cafe. The left side represents the void, the staircase that connects all three levels.

The staircase void
One of my main goals for this project is to aid people of all ages and backgrounds to come together. The book cafe on street level is the ideal space to encourage this. Therefore, a safe and accessible staircase connecting all three floors creating a void to bring in natural light and improve circulation of space was one of the driving factors of my proposal.
