RUL Marylebone Campus Design Project

Project Brief:

Using colour and light to define spaces that have a character and a mood. This was a live project in collaboration with British paint and wallpaper manufacturing company ‘Little Greene’; we were commissioned to design a spatial experience and feature one colour from the company’s latest collection.

Concept

The aim was to manipulate the journey through the transitional space in the building, the hallway as one enters the building and the two rooms connected to it. Using colour and light I created a threshold was impactful and drew people into space.

My concept was based on the Japanese philosophy of mono-no-aware, the transience of time.

I also showcased 3 colours from the Little Greene paint collection that had launched at the time.

Design Development

I designed a Japanese inspired tearoom and a gallery space connected through the hallway. I also tried to open up the narrow hallway using mirrors to manipulate light and make the space seem bigger. I wanted to attract the attention of pedestrians walking along Paddington Road so that they would come into the space, slow down and savour each moment and feel the flow of time.
